About Joel Bernstein

The Early Years After 45 years practicing law, Joel retired in early 2025. But he couldn't quite let go completely.

From NYC to Massachusetts Joel grew up in New York City and couldn't wait to escape the urban chaos. After law school, he found his way to Massachusetts where he built his practice and his life. He earned his general law degree, then added an environmental law specialization, and finally completed a master's in tax law - because apparently he enjoys homework more than most people.

The 6 AM Law Reader For over two decades, Joel woke up at 6 AM every morning to read estate planning law for exactly one hour. Yes, really. His wife thought he was slightly crazy, but this daily ritual kept him sharp on the constantly changing rules that could save his clients thousands.

Plain English Passion Joel had a strong interest in the work of attorney Bryan Garner, author of over 25 books including the leading guide "Legal Writing in Plain English." Garner was named Legal-Writing and Reference-Book Author of the Decade in 2009 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Plain Language. This influenced Joel's approach to making complex legal concepts understandable for everyday families.

Speaking and Writing Starting in 1993, Joel spoke at over 300 public lectures across Massachusetts, sharing his insights on estate planning with families and fellow attorneys. He was also a columnist for the American Bar Association, contributing articles that helped attorneys nationwide better serve their clients through clearer communication and practical planning strategies.

Family Life Joel and his wife have been happily married for about 32 years and raised three children. They share a passion for thoughtful planning - whether it's for family futures or weekend projects.

Retirement (Sort Of) These days, Joel can't take new clients (retirement has its perks), but he still loves helping Massachusetts families avoid expensive mistakes. He reads every email personally and is happy to connect you with excellent attorneys who will take great care of you.

The personal stories Joel shares are fictional but based on real patterns he's seen in estate planning. He uses these stories to make important legal concepts more memorable and relatable.
